New York City is an entertainment capital of the world. It is home to world-class theater, ballet, museums, symphonies, fine dining, music, sports teams, and more. But the rest of the state should not be overlooked. From the Adirondack Mountains to Lake Erie and Niagara Falls, and from the beaches of Long Island to the Appalachian plateau, New York state has a diverse and exciting landscape and ample recreational activities for every taste.
As a fashion, art, and theater mecca, New York City is said to set the cultural tone for the rest of the country. Theatergoers can take in a famous Broadway play or an experimental off-off Broadway production. For music lovers, the Lincoln Center houses the Metropolitan Opera House, the Juilliard School, and the New York Philharmonic, and is the largest cultural complex in the world. New York is home to the largest museum in the country, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the notable American Museum of National History, the Guggenheim, and the Museum of Modern Art. Many television shows, news broadcasts, and movies are filmed in the city. Several major magazines and publishing houses call New York City home and the fashion industry is headquartered in the garment district in midtown. Tourists can stay busy visiting New York City's well-known landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the United Nations, and the former site of the World Trade Center. World-famous annual events are the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Outside of New York City, notable cultural activities include the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, the Corning Glass Center in Corning, and the New York State Museum in Albany. Many cities also have their own symphonies and museums and fine architecture can be found all around the state. Annual festivals include the Adirondack Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, the Peaceful Valley Bluegrass Festival in the Catskills, and the New York State Rhythm and Blues Festival in Syracuse.
Sports fans have plenty of teams to root for in New York. The state is home to two baseball teams, the New York Yankees who play at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and the New York Mets who play at Shea Stadium in Queens. Football teams include the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, and the New York Giants. Basketball fans can cheer for the New York Knicks and hockey fans can follow the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, or the Buffalo Sabres. The National Baseball Hall of Fame is located nearby in Cooperstown, New York. The state is also home to professional soccer teams, lacrosse, and women's basketball.
New York also has many opportunities for outdoor sports like fishing, boating, and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean or one of its many lakes. There are ample opportunities for hiking and backpacking in the Adirondacks and the Catskills, as well as opportunities for skiing in the winter. The state boasts more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails.
