Summary
The Senior Director, Corporate Development will be actively involved in supporting business and corporate development strategy and activities. The position involves leading research/early clinical stage transactions including licensing deals, partnerships, support of M&A, and as necessary renegotiations and amendments to existing agreements, to help achieve SGEN’s goals. The Senior Director, Corporate Development will lead a cross functional team to value and formulate deal proposals that they will present to executive management and upon approval move deals through negotiation and execution. Additional activities include identifying and evaluating research, pre-clinical and clinical opportunities to augment SGEN’s oncology pipeline.
Responsibilities:
- Negotiate research/ early clinical stage licensing deals
- Manage business due diligence processes by working closely with team members from tax, finance, legal, etc. areas within the company
- Manage complex issues during agreement negotiations and partner with legal to construct solutions
- Frame issues and options clearly to enable SeaGen management team to make informed decisions.
- Provide guidance to the development of analytical models and partnering with finance to perform financial analyses to comprehensively value opportunities
- Understand the potential partner’s interests to help ensure transactions are structured so that the parties’ interests are aligned as much as possible.
- Evaluate research and early clinical stage opportunities together with respective functional area colleagues
- Establish collaborative, effective, and trusting relationships with key internal functions including commercial, Clinical, R&D, Legal, Manufacturing and Finance to ensure the free flow of information and ideas
- Attend several major business and medical conferences each year to help prospect for new opportunities, build relationships with potential partners and negotiate active deals.
- Provide project support to other BD team members as needed
Qualifications:
- A degree in life sciences and an MBA preferred
- Five or more years of previous business development transaction experience in Biotech or Pharma. Prior investment banking experience or R&D or project management roles within Biotech/Pharma are also highly valued
- Demonstrated success in evaluating and negotiating significant business development transactions. Further, a proven record of accomplishment in identifying and structuring licensing agreements, strategic alliances, and technology partnerships
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to influence management, de-escalate and resolve conflict, manage politics and get things done quickly and effectively
- Proficient in Excel (including programing “if/and” statements, financial formulas, pivot tables, etc.), PowerPoint (able to draft logical, concise presentations with good formatting and storyboarding) and Evaluate Pharma or similar database (to generate reports by topic, on products/targets/indications of interest)

- Provides ‘customer support’ to internal teams and external collaborators (existing or potential partners)
